Went to the doc yesterday to draw some blood. I have to do that on a regular basis because of my thyroid problem. So at least twice a year is required. Sometimes more often. This have resulted in that I know exactly where they should put the needle to get blood. Anyway, yesterday when I got there there was a nurse student and they asked if it was ok that she did it so she got some practice. And since i couldn't care less if they failed and had to retry 15 times (other than that it gives me bruises) I said "Sure!".
I felt a bit sorry for the girl because it was pretty obvious that she was very nervous so I decided to make it easy for her so I started joking and telling her that it didn't matter for me if she missed a couple of times or so.
Me: You don't want to go after that one (pointing on a very visible blood vessel). The needle will go straight through.
She: Oh ok. Thank you for telling me. I would have gone for that one.
Me: I know. That's why I told you *smiling* Now, you want to go there (pointing at a specific place on my arm).
She: Ok then!
Then she took her time to really try to locate the blood vessel and trying to locate it again. And again. Even asked the nurse if she thought it was ok there but the nurse just told her to trust herself on that one and then left. She looked a bit overwhelmed but then decided to do it. And she hit jackpot on the first try.
Me: Well, look at that! Good job!
She looked so perplexed and also very happy that she made it. It kinda made my day because I could see her confidence grow as I was watching her. I also told the nurse when she got back that she did a very good job. The nurse said that she didn't doubted, even for a second, that she would. That made her grow even more. It made me very happy to see.
Small things for me but I am sure it was a big deal for the girl.
